THE OLD WAY IS LIMITED
Not long ago, the perfect smoked meat required that someone get up in the middle of the night and tend a smoker all day to keep the temperature in the ideal range. This poor guy was tied to the smoker and missed out on much of the fun going on around him.
Gas grills made it easier to control the temperature but couldn’t provide the desired smoked flavor.
The advent of the electric smoker made it possible for microprocessors to take control of the smoking operation and even send important information to your WiFi connected smart phone; but now your smoker needed to be plugged in. Who wants to take a noisy generator to the family picnic?
Another problem with electric smokers and grills is that they can take more than half an hour to come to full temperature. That isn’t a problem for a 12-hour smoking project, but frustrating when all you want to do is grill a few hamburgers.

A thermoelectric power supply (technology used by NASA) turns some of that heat into electricity to power the microprocessor along with the WiFi and Bluetooth radios.
